Properties of Metals II:
Oxidation and Reduction

P

time requ.: 5 minutes
objective: electrochemical reactions
material:
  • beaker 25ml
  • teat pipette ~2ml
chemicals:
  • silver nitrate solution w=0,1%
  • copper foil
  • other metals like iron nail, magnesium, silver
  • distilled water
procedure: Fill approx. 2ml of silver nitrate solution in the beaker and dilute with 8ml water. Put a small strip of metal foil or wire into the solution and wait for 2-3 minutes.
observation: E.g. Cu: The surface becomes black, sometimes crystals appear.
interpretation:

2Ag+(aq)   +   NO3-(aq)   +   Cu   --->   2Ag   +   Cu2+(aq)   +   NO3-(aq)
 silver nitrate (dissolved)   copper       silver      copper nitrate (dissolved)

disposal of: Heavy metal solutions.
