How to Determine a Melting Point

P

time requ.: 15 minutes.
objective: States of matter, determination of the melting point
material:
  • beaker 50ml
  • thermometer
  • wire frame
  • burner
  • lighter
  • tripod
chemicals:
  • stearic acid

procedure: Fill beaker half with stearic acid. Heat it until all matter is molten and temperatur is about 100°C. Put out the burner and let cool down. Determine temperature of substance all 30s. Note in a table. Draw a T/t-graph.
observation: At 70°C the temperature is stable for a period of time.
interpretation: The melting point of stearic acid is 70°C.
disposal of: Use again.
